INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF DISSEMINATION OF ITS DECLARATION

1. The United Nations is the only international organization which has the mandate and means and legitimacy to represent the vast majority of the peoples of the world through their national governments to advance the common aims of international peace, justice, human rights, equality and social and economic advancement of all peoples;

2. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was unanimously approved by all members of the United Nations on December 10, 1948; (http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/index.shtml);

3. The approval was an unprecedented achievement by 51 member countries and their peoples which required many compromises, which has stood the test of time and overcome national, religious, racial, and cultural boundaries;

4. Rotary Clubs, Rotaract and Interact Clubs throughout the world and their members are expected to want to approve the Declaration and then to encourage its dissemination worldwide and to encourage parents, teachers and others to educate children and adults about its origin, purpose, and rights and freedoms and to encourage them to celebrate it, share its importance and live by it as a means towards a peaceful world;

5. It is expected that religious organizations and other organizations and individuals interested in international understanding, goodwill and peace will likewise want to endorse the Declaration and to want to disseminate it amongst their networks and to the disadvantaged with encouragement to read it, celebrate it, share its importance and live by it as a means towards a more peaceful world;

6. All organizations and individuals supporting the choice below are also supporting December 10th of each year becoming an annual day of celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and promotion of it worldwide to and for the benefit of all peoples everywhere led by the United Nations in New York and throughout its worldwide network of affiliations and agencies;

7. The opposite to world peace is the real possibility of destruction of the world and the human species as was signalled in 1945 with the use of the atomic bomb;

8. The different impact of conflict on women and girls is acknowledged and the need to fully engage women in conflict resolution, peacekeeping and peacebuilding must be ensured;

9. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its words approved unanimously in 1948 demonstrate the vast majority of peoples in the world have recognized we are members of the human family each with inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights.
